None used to compel any of the students in my school to be a volunteer....but fact is that an indirect threatening was there! They put a little pressure by saying about 'grades' for these works as per syllabus (Socially Useful Public Work)!
So I too have been a volunteer in our school during many occasions!
The most enjoyed were my volunteer duties in "Refreshment" section during sports days & annual days. My main duty there was to give water, lemon juice & other eatables for officials & other students. So I was never thirsty or hungry..lol. There were times when I smuggled eatables to my friends who were taking part in sports.
Once or thrice I had got duty in ground , that too in running track. There my duty was similar to a postman, taking messages from one end of the ground to another end. Always I had to run to give results to the jury section. After each racing competition, my race starts! Well I enjoyed it.
The last annual day for me in the school was unforgettable!
I got duty in the parking lot. A lot of mess! I am supposed to guide those drivers 'park there', 'no parking there',' please move your vehicle little',' its two wheeler area so u may not park here',.................etc ! There was an old jumping pit filled with sand near to the road & parking area, so I had to take care of that too! All vehicles come directly to it, I used to jump in front of those vehicles and warn them. At last I fed up and i put a chair in front of that pit a sat on it! After everything was over I reached home @ 2 or 2:30 pm late in night!
Nice to remember those volunteer experiences!
I still find it great to remember the day on which we first reaped paddy. All of us in wet muddy soil with sickles in hand, we reaped a lot. Few of us even threw mud at each other. We even made concrete once. I was the guy who filled sand and later I took the easy job of pouring water to the concrete mixer. And we made our road to high school building much stronger with that concrete. Our then principal & director of school also worked along with us. After the work he asked us "what you guys wish to eat?". He was in such a good mood that he may buy anything! We asked for broast chicken, which was then popular. It came in a delivery van in no time and all of us enjoyed eaating it.
